Hands on with the Google G1

Users who have been following me on twitter for quite some time would be aware of the fact that I recently purchased the Google G1 phone on my trip to Dubai, which happens to be the first ever phone being powered by Google Android.

After a series of attempts to hack the phone and activate it with my local carrier, I was finally able to test its features and completely analyze the Android OS. A detailed review of the G1 can be read below.

The Google G1 is basically a combination of two smart technologies one of which is the HTC Dream while the other is Android. HTC Dream is the hardware part of the phone whereas Android is the operating system which runs on it and provides all the functionality to the user.
Android failed to impress me when it comes to the boot timing, just like the iPhone. Symbian has a clear win over this case as the G1 takes approximately three times the time of a Nokia N-series phone to boot itself into operation.

As the phone boots up, the user is presented with a setup wizard to link his/her Google account to the phone to sync contacts, mail and calendar.

Logging into G1 is like stepping into a world of awesomeness with less resources around. Although the features are awesome, the G1 has got a poor battery life and hardly makes out a day without a full recharge.

As for the OS, Android is very responsive and fun to use. I really loved the multitasking features of the phone and the ability to control and navigate through the trackball, instead of just the touchscreen.

The G1 also features a full non-virtual Qwerty keyboard which reveals itself as soon as the screen is slided onto one side. Everytime you have to type something, you have to slide the screen to one side which is actually a big turndown but as the rumors say, a virtual keyboard is on its way in the new firmware codenamed Cupcake for G1.

The 3.2MP camera in G1 has pretty good results but it is unable to record video unless you use a third party app from the Android Marketplace. The browser is quite fast in rendering web pages but still not as good as Safari on iPhone. As for the storage memory of G1, it offers a microSD slot which can go up to 16GB maximum.

I really loved the experience of using Google G1 and am loving it so far. I shall be posting more on some unlocking techniques and firmware updates for the G1.

Lenovo to unveil a pocket Netbook




It was long in the news that Lenovo is working on a netbook that fits in the pocket and perhaps the recent leaked images of the Pocket Yoga Netbook are here to support this claim.

Previously, only Sony has been able to claim of such a netbook that is slim enough to fit in the back pocket i.e. Sony Vaio P but many doubted the claim as the Sony Vaio P is not that slim in shape. (See the ad for Sony Vaio P below and decide for yourself)

However, Lenovo plans to give buyers the ultimate real expeirence when it comes to sticking the notebook in their pockets. Few photos of the product can be seen below which actually originated at the Lenovo Flickr Photos stream.Apparently, the Lenovo Pocket netbook boasts a ultra-widescreen with touch display and full keyboard.

First Android Netbook makes a debut


For long have we been listening to rumors about Android Netbooks being in the making but apart from all those too-good-to-be-true concepts and mockups, none actually ever managed to come to the market.

However, a Chinese company called Skytone wants to take the lead in this by releasing the first ever Android Netbook to the masses.

Even though the news is big as no Android Netbook was expected to be released in the market by end of this year, still the specifications of the device by Skytone doesn't put as at wonders.

As listed, the Netbook is powered by the Google Androind OS but a closer look at the hardware specifications indicates that this little guy is not even as powerful as an Android cellphone. The CPU is a slow 533MHz ARM-11 with only 128MB of RAM and 1GB of storage space (up to 4GB optional).

There seems to be three USB ports with an SD card along with WiFi and Ethernet and a optional Webcam.

The 7 inch display is able to spin around its base making it more like a Tablet and also the Netbooks boasts to have gaming controls on either side of its display which are plain useless for someone who actually plans to use the Netbook for Internet and work.

A clear say on the price is nowhere to be found, though it is speculated that this Android Netbook might costs anything between $100 to $250. Follow on to the product page for more information.

Crunchpad to make a November release


For those of you who have been keeping up with the news and announcements related to Crunchpad, the Tablet PC by TechCrunch, well all we can say for now is that it is real and its coming this November.
So what features will the Crunchpad boast of?

For one, its a Tablet PC with a 12-inch screen and will mainly be used for browsing the web and doing web-related tasks. All apps on the Crunchpad will be web-based and we are still unsure if it possesses any media capabilities such as watching movies or listening to music.

It will feature a custom web-kit browser which shall be running over a custom Linux OS. There will be Wi-Fi and 3G access and also one USB port to handle/transfer data to a thumb drive.

Apart from this, there is nothing that the Crunchpad can do so we hardly believe that it will be any match for the supposed Apple Tablet that is to come in September this year. The Crunchpad will be probably priced around $400.

Michael Arrington from TechCrunch will be officially introducing the device at an event somewhere in August.

Nokia Booklet 3G Specs and Pricing announced

As much as you would love the design and specifications of this little guy, the pricing is something that would make you pretend that you change your plans (in case you even thought of buying one in the first place).

First the specifications in detail:

* CPU and OS: Intel Atom 1.6 Ghz, Windows 7.
* Display size: 10.1 inch, 1280×720 pixels, Glass window.
* Battery Life: 16 cell battery with 12 hours of full-charged life.
* Memory and Storage: 1GB DDR2 RAM with 120GB HDD.
* Design and Color: Comes in three colors namely Black, White and Azure.
* Connectivity: In-built WLan, also supports 3G data connections.
* Nokia Services: Ovi Suite 2.0, Nokia Music for PC, Ovi Maps and Social Hub.
* Other: GPS, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera with microphone and Accelerometer.

As for the pricing, the Nokia Booklet 3G will cost around at 575 Euros which makes it equal to $820 USD approximately. Perhaps the price is the actual reason why Nokia doesn't want to label it as a Netbook.

Earlier there have been quite a few rumors about Nokia entering the Netbook market but until now, the debate was nothing more than a piece of wind-talk. However, this morning Nokia announced that it will soon be shipping a new product which it calls as the Nokia Booklet 3G and from what it looks like, its more than just a Netbook.

Interestingly! Nokia itself is hesitating to brand this machine as a Netbook and goes on by calling it as a mini-laptop. Though we definitely would like to support Nokia on this as this device is more powerful and efficient than a regular netbook, even though it bears the guts of an Intel Atom processor which is now a standard for Netbook devices.

Below are some of the detailed features of the Nokia Booklet 3G.

So basically you can think of it as something between a smartphone and a laptop, but still its impressive.

No word yet on the price and availability of the device but I guess we will be seeing more of it at Nokia World 09 on September 2nd, along with the detailed specifications and probably even a preview.

Sony to Fold-Up Monitors


Sony is developing a new fold-up display that could herald the production of fold-away computers
According to The New Journal of Physics, researchers from Sony and the Max Planck Institute are exploring the possibility of creating, and are working on the development of, bendable optically assessed organic light emitting displays.

When fully developed, this technology could lead to the production of electronic poster displays for advertising as well as digital newspapers that can be folded and televisions which can be bent.

Additionally, the “upconversion” full-colour displays have several other advantages than flexibility over current display technologies. These include faster response times, almost unlimited viewing angles, and a virtually unlimited possibility of shapes and sizes.

Sony originally announced news of a similar development in 2006, but that early development ran into problems such as distortion when bent and size-limitations. Their new technology isn’t beset by any of those previous problems and therefore makes the development open to many further possibilities.
It certainly appears that technology is providing some amazing gadgets and gizmos that we never even dreamed of only ten years ago. Amazing developments are occurring lately, such as the one above, that can only change society for the better if used correctly.

It appears, to the untrained eye, that the depth of development of technological gadgets and gizmos is unlimited. However there is just one thing that puts the brakes firmly on one avenue of development – that being component miniaturization.

Current technologies have made it possible to build microelectronic devices out of almost infinitesimally-small transistors as small as 45 nanometers across – considerably less than the width of a human hair. You can pack millions of these devices into a small package, such as the processor chip of the computer that you are using right now.

There is a limit beyond which it appears impossible to go though. 45nm is only the distance across a small number of atoms of the doped molecular substrate used in the transistor’s construction, and we’re already getting close to as small as all possibility will allow these devices to be built without massive fabrication costs, electromechanical breakdowns, and current-leakages in the individual transistors themselves. In short, we’re nearly at the point where technology is as small as we can make it.

Nevertheless, even if we do ever actually reach that limit, there still seems to be almost endless possibilities in utilizing the available technologies.

I love gadgets and gizmos not because they are cool piece of hardware but because this hardware technology is eternal and can never end. Though its a fact that new gadgets soon become obsolete but with every new generation we get to see a new technology and with every new technology we get to see a new gadget and thats how it works. Recently I encountered a gadget that was not only worth reviewing but is indeed one of the most unique gadgets I have ever seen in my life.
